Over 183,000 Eastern farmers to be put on 2015/2016 FISP

Government says over 183,000 small-scale farmers are set to benefit from the 2015/2016 Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP) in Eastern Province.

Agriculture and Livestock deputy minister Greyford Monde says this is aimed at taking on board more small-scale farmers to engage in agriculture and enhance household food security.

Mr. Monde says government remains committed to improving the livelihood of small-scale farmers in Eastern Province hence its engagement of a total of 183,209 farmers under FISP this year.

And Mr. Monde says there is need to develop agro-initiatives that take cognizance of the unique challenges that the agriculture sector faces in post jubilee times.

He notes that while strides have been made in increasing agricultural production, many cross-cutting issues such as nutrition and related challenges, climate change and unsure markets for farmers’ produce compromised efforts to improve the lives of farmers.
