The Zambian Voice says it is weighing the option of filing a civil lawsuit against former President Rupiah Banda if the State fails to appeal against his acquittal in the case in which he was charged with abuse of authority of office involving a US$2.5 million government to government oil deal between Zambia and Nigeria.

Executive Director Chilufya Tayali has told QFM News that his organisation has since begun consultations with lawyers over the matter.

Mr Tayali says his organisation doubts the State will utilize the two weeks appeal period granted by the Lusaka Magistrate Court to lodge an appeal against the acquittal of the former President.

He explains that the fact that the charge the former President was facing was criminal and a sole responsibility of the State to pursue, his organization may file for a civil case if the State fails to appeal against his acquittal.

Mr Tayali says the Zambian Voice is relying on the already established facts that there was an Oil deal between the Zambian and Nigerian Governments and that some money was allegedly accrued.
