The Zambia Consumers Association (ZACA) says government should not allow Shoprite to start importing genetically modified organisms (GMO) foodstuff.

ZACA information and publicity secretary Juba Sakala says government should first critically analyze the effects of such foods on the people of Zambia.

Mr. Sakala has questioned why Shoprite would want to begin importing GMO foods when there other non GMO foods available for importation.

He says Shoprite should explain to the people of Zambia why it wants to begin importing GMO foods.

Mr Sakala has since commended Agriculture Minister Given Lubinda for coming out strongly that government has no intention of allowing the importation of GMO foods, stressing that government should remain committed to its word.

He has further urged Shoprite to look beyond its interest, by considering the health of the Zambian people.

Shoprite is seeking a permit from the National Biosafety Authority to start importing food products containing genetically modified maize.
