Govt looks to renewable energy to supplement hydropower

Government says it is doing its best to promote renewable energy as an alternative source of energy in view of the heightened load shedding the country is experiencing as a result of poor rainfall experienced during the last rainy season.

Energy Deputy Minister Charles Zulu says renewable energy has huge potential to contribute to the national energy mix and increase access to sustainable energy.

Mr. Zulu has encouraged Zambians and especially institutions to buy generators so that they are not affected negatively by the ongoing countrywide load shedding.

He states that government is also doing its best to make renewable energy machines affordable for every Zambians so that productivity is not affected by the load shedding going on in the country.

Mr Zulu points out that government waived duty on renewable energy machines to do with solar such as generators way back to make them affordable to as many people and institutions.

Mr. Zulu notes that the only challenge is that the retailers of the renewable energy machines have still maintained high prices despite government removing duty on their importation.
