Police, Mbala DC saves 8 year old from being married off

Quick intervention by Police and the District Commissioner in Mbala last week saved a 15 year old Grade 8 girl of Kaseshya village in Chief Zombe’s area from being married off.

Both Police and Acting District Commissioner, Felix Mungaila have confirmed the development to ZANIS.

Mr. Mungaila said police acted on a tip off from a concerned member of the community that the girl was about to be married off.

He said police lay ambush on the bridegroom when he was about to be handed the girl by parents at a traditional wedding ceremony.

He said Police managed to apprehend the parents from both sides and the girls who were later detained at Mbala Police Station.

Mr. Mungaila however said the bridegroom managed to escape the police dragnet.

He said all the detainees had been released with a caution to allow the girl go back to school until completion of her grade 12 level.
