The Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) says regulating herbal formulations has become a big problem.

ZAMRA Public relations Officer Ludovic Mwape explains that the challenge is especially with the products coming from foreign countries through porous border areas as their presence is not felt everywhere.

He however notes that ZAMRA is working closely with other agencies on the boarders such as the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) to assist them and inform them when they receive goods that need to be checked.

Mr. Mwape also states that the rampant advertising of herbal products that are not certified has posed a challenge for them to regulate the products citing that they have since written to the media houses in the country to ensure that before they advertise such products they scrutinize the product or request the person advertising the product to seek permission from ZAMRA.

He stresses that it is an offense to advertise a medicinal product without being granted authority by ZAMRA.

Mr. Mwape further states that they are increasing awareness to the members of the public to desist from being buying products from unregistered outlets.
