ZCID calms parties on political parties Act

The Zambia Centre for Interparty Dialogue (ZCID) has assured all member political parties that there is nothing to worry about the proposed political parties Act.

ZCID Executive Director Horrance Chilando explains that the Act is based on the request made by political parties themselves to government and is also covered under Artuicle 87(4)(a) of the Draft Constitution.

Mr Chilando says the proposed Act is a product of a long process of consultations between ZCID members and government dating back many years.

He adds that this is being done with the full support of the ZCID Board representing National Secretaries and Secretaries General of member political parties.

Mr Chilando states that the Political Parties Act will not be unique to Zambia as many progressive democracies have come up with similar pieces of legislation to improve the performance of their party systems.

Mr Chilando says the political parties law will define political parties for what they really are, key institutions of governance and not mere clubs or associations.
