South Africans in Zambia celebrate 21st National Day

ThembisileVisiting South African Deputy Minister of Energy Thembisile Majola says there is need to ensure young people learn the history of the relationship between Zambia and South Africa.

Speaking during the commemoration of South Africa’s 21st National Day of Freedom and Democracy in Lusaka today, Ms Majola says there is need for young people to know that Zambia played a pivotal role in ensuring South Africa gained independence in 1994.

Ms Majola says Zambia and South Africa should continue to promote peace and unity not just in the two countries but within the African continent.

She recalls how Zambia became a home for thousands of South Africans before that country got independence.

Ms Majola was however quick to mention that the xenophobic attacks witnessed recently in South Africa should not be promoted by any person saying Africans are one.

She says the government of South Africa is doing its best in addressing common challenges such as unemployment, poverty and inequality among its people.

Speaking at the same event, Foreign Affairs Deputy Minister Rayford Mbulu says Zambia derives its inspiration from South Africa’s economic stability thus the need for the two countries to strengthen bilateral relations.

The 21st National Day of South Africa was supposed to be commemorated on the 27th April but could not take place in Zambia because there was no South African Ambassador to Zambia at the time.
