The Jesuit Center for Theological Reflection (JCTR) has observed that boosting agriculture and building around it a strong rural economy still remains crucial for Zambia.

The JCTR says appropriate interventions and support for the rural economy through boosting Agriculture will create millions of the much needed jobs as well as wealth and food security in the country.

Outgoing JCTR Social and Economic Development Programme Manager Andrew Simpasa says this is in addition to improving crisis resilience and social political progress in terms of democratization through people’s participation in the political process.

He says it is for this reason that the JCTR has actively engaged in rural work since inception with growing attention in areas of service provision, sustainable agriculture and climate change.

He said today at the official opening of the JCTR June Biannual Rural Basic Needs Basket stakeholders meeting.

And Acting JCTR Social and Economic Development Programme manager Faith Kalondawanga has disclosed that the focus of the June Biannual Rural Basket Needs finding is on six districts which are Chongwe, Kazungula, Mufumbwe, Mambwe, Masaiti and Shangombo.

Ms. Kalondawanga says the scope of the findings extend from Agriculture, Health, Education and Water and Sanitation.

She says the main issues that have come out from the findings range from long distances to Health and Education institutions, poor Agriculture practices, poor road network, and concerns on the Social Cash transfer among other things.
