Sikota urges sensitization on Public Order ACT

Opposition United Liberal Party (ULP) President Sakwiba Sikota says he does not think the Public Order ACT in its current form necessarily needs to be amended.

Mr. Sikota who is also a prominent constitutional lawyer has suggested that for the fact that all around the world similar legislation exist what is needed in Zambia is only sensitization of stakeholders on how the Public Order ACT ought to be implemented.

He has told Qfm News in an interview that he is of view that the sensitization that is needed is for the people to know the requirements they need to give to the Police in their notification to hold a public procession.

Mr. Sikota says the Police should similarly keep in minds that what is provided for in implementation of the Public Order ACT is only notification and not permission to hold a public procession.

He notes that unless there is a good reason for a procession not to take place, can the Police advise that holding of such a public gathering it has been notified of be postponed.

Mr. Sikota has however suggested those who feel that the legislation is not a good law are the ones that have onus to state the exact provision of the Act that needs to be reviewed.

He states that what he personally thinks should be looked at is the administration of the ACT.
