More district child labour committees coming- Govt

Government says it intends to establish more district child labour committees in the remaining districts to enhance enforcement of child labour legislation.

Speaking during the commemoration of the World Day Against Child Labour in Lusaka today, Acting Labour Minister Joseph Kasonde says government has made moderate achievements in the fight against child labour in the country.

Dr. Kasonde says this is evident through the hiring of 55 new labour officers in various districts to boost the inspectorate and enhance enforcement of labour laws on child labor.

Dr. Kasonde states that the fight against child labor is a huge task which needs concerted efforts, commitment and action by all stakeholders.

Speaking earlier, Human Rights Commission Director Florence Chibwesha says the commission acknowledges strides made by government in ending child labour in the country by adopting and domesticating some international labour laws to protect children.

Speaking at the same event, International Labour Organization Representative Mukubesa Sanyambe says approximately about one hundred and sixty eighty million children around the world are in child labour which he says calls for concerted efforts in ending child labor in the world.

And Child Labour Ambassador Samson Mutambo has called on traditional leaders in the country to get involved and ensure that children in their chiefdoms are not exploited in anyway saying they have a role to protect their subjects.

This year’s World Day Against Child Labour was commemorated under the theme “No to child Labor, Yes to quality Education”.
