Challenges of public universities worry YALI

The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) is concerned with the challenges public universities are facing in the country.

YALI President Andrew Nthewewe says the challenges government funded universities in the country are facing must be dealt with conclusively.

Mr Nthewewe notes that government has not been courageous enough to deal with the challenges facing public universities.

Mr. Nthewewe says government should come out in the open and state clearly that it cannot afford to run the universities on public resources only, and go ahead to seek private partnerships.

He notes that seeking private partnerships would be a brave and courageous decision for government to make in ending disturbances to the academic calendar of these universities.

Mr. Nthewewe says government should consider private partnerships not only to deal with the challenges of resources, but many other challenges higher learning institutions in the country are facing such as issues to do with bursaries.

He states that education is key to national development and therefore deserves to be given the necessary attention.
