Newcastle: John Carver and Steve Stone sacked by club

Newcastle caretaker manager John Carver has been sacked along with coach Steve Stone, BBC Sport has learned.

Carver, 50, took charge for the final 20 games of this season following the departure of Alan Pardew to Crystal Palace, but won just three matches.

The club narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League.

Former England and Derby manager Steve McClaren is the favourite to become Pardew’s permanent successor when he returns from holiday later this week.

McClaren was twice approached by Newcastle towards the end of the season but preferred to stay at Derby.

Analysis: BBC Newcastle’s Mick Lowes:

“Carver didn’t do himself any favours over the last five months or so.
“He will go away thinking that his reputation has been somewhat blemished simply because of the fact he only managed to win three games out of a possible 20 as caretaker manager.
“It was a job he’d held out for for years, he was given the opportunity and it just didn’t work.”

He was then sacked when the Rams failed to reach the Championship play-offs.

Carver, who played as a junior for Newcastle, returned to his hometown club in 2010 and was appointed assistant manager to Pardew the following year.

In May, after taking nine points from a possible 48, Carver said he was the best coach in the Premier League, adding: “If I have the right tools I can do the job.”

He also accused one of his own players, defender Mike Williamson, of getting sent off on purpose in the 3-0 defeat by Leicester.
