The Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company (LWSC) has set aside $65 million to implement a 5 year Lusaka sanitation project funded by the world bank.

Company Marketing and Public Relations Manager Topsy Sikalinda says the project will greatly assist the company to improve sewer and sanitation service provision to all its customers by the year 2030.

Mr. Sikalinda explains that the company will use $38 million to upgrade and expand the Ngwerere and Manchinchi sheds and network and will further expand the sewer system in Kafue road, Emmasdale, Chaisa, Chawama, Kuomboka and Garden Compounds.

Mr. Sikalinda says $14 million will be used on site sanitation facilities and that over 180,000 Lusaka residents in peri urban areas will benefit from the onsite sanitation component of the project.

He points out that the company is confident that the project will help protect ground water and prevent water treatment costs from being passed on to the customers adding that it will also help the company respond better to customer demand for sanitation services.

Mr. Sikalinda further states that once the project is completed in December 2020, public health is expected to improve thousands of Lusaka residents especially those in peri urban areas stressing that good sanitation systems and coverage is essential for national development as it will improve the quality of life in line with the country’s aspirations to be a middle income country by 2030.
