Youth and Sport Permanent Secretary, Agnes Musunga has disclosed that the draft national youth empowerment action plan is now awaiting the final approval by Cabinet.

Ms. Musunga says government is optimistic that once the action plan which it has developed in collaboration with the Africa Development Bank, International Labour Organization and the GIZ of German, is approved it will provide adequate instruments and strategies of addressing the issue of youth unemployment in the country.

She says the action is also expected to comprehensively address the issue of youth under empowerment through a multi sectoral approach

Ms. Musunga states this is because the national youth empowerment action plan is anchored on among other things the process of migrating from over reliance on micro interventions to coherently mainstreamed sectoral and local economic development.

She said this in a speech read for her by Youth and Sport Director Collins Mulonda during a two days Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) and ILO youth awareness workshop on trade unions being held in Lusaka.

Earlier, ZCTU Deputy Secretary General Misheck Nyambose disclosed that the youth awareness workshop marks the first step towards taking affirmative action and organizing young workers in the congress.

Mr. Nyambose says the ZCTU has taken note of the fact that little has been done in integrating issues of young workers in the structures of the Congress.

And ILO representative John Banda has also emphasized the need for trade unions to address issues affecting young workers with the view of nurturing them for the future.
