Chief Macha of the Tonga speaking people in Choma District has encouraged fellow traditional leaders not to give up in their quest to improve hygiene and sanitation in their chiefdoms.

Chief Macha says it is gratifying that Zambia through the House of Chiefs has been conferred with the 2015 local government leadership award by the Africa sanitation conference which was held in Dakar, Senegal.

Chief Macha says this achievement has come because of the efforts by traditional leaders in the country who are ensuring that their subjects adhere to improved sanitation conditions.

He says Chiefs in the country whose chiefdoms have not been declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) through the Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) Programme should work hard so that their chiefdoms are declared Open Defecation Free.

Chief Macha states that traditional leaders must take a leading role in ensuring that their subjects have toilets at household level to avoid the spread of diseases such as cholera and dysentery.
