Mahtani arrest ill-timed – FODEP

The Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) says the arrest of Finance Bank proprietor Rajan Mahtani is ill-timed considering that it comes barely a day after a senior PF disclosed that the ruling party had received campaign funding from the business executive.

FODEP Executive Director MacDonald Chipenzi says there is need for the government to be more transparent especially when it comes to the prosecution of certain people, so that Zambians have confidence in the country’s governance system.

Mr. Chipenzi says the arrest of Dr Mahtani might raise speculation that he is being harassed by the Police because of what the former Patriotic Front media Director Brian Hapunda disclosed in his confidential letter to President Edgar Lungu.

Dr Mahtani who was arrested yesterday and charged with forgery has since step down as Finance Bank Board Chairman.
Board Member William Nyirenda has since taken over as interim Board Chairman.
