Zanaco toil to reclaim top spot

Zanaco have returned to the top of the Faz Super League table but earned their home win over Mufulira Wanderers the hard way at Sunset Stadium in Lusaka on Wednesday.

The bankers beat the nine-time Zambian champions 3-2 to rise from second to first to reclaim top spot five days after exchanging places with defending champions Zesco United.

Zanaco secured the vital three points thanks to goals from Augustine Mulenga, a Warren Kunda own goal and a dramatic late winner from Mathews Macha.

Mulenga put Zanaco in the lead in the 43rd minute after some poor defending by Kunda. It got worse for Kunda in the 45th minute when he turned in Mulenga’s shot to gift Zanaco a 2-0 halftime lead.

But Wanderers refused to die and defender Moses Lolozi put the promoted side back in the contest when he converted a penalty in the 52nd minute.

Wanderers equalised on the hour-mark through a Taonga Bwembya free-kick.

However, Zanaco crushed Wanderers’ hopes of at least a point when Macha headed-in Roderick Kabwe’s cross in the 88th minute.

Zanaco move one point clear of Zesco on 51 points from nine matches played.

Wanderers slide from 5th to 6th on 14 points and will hope for better fortunes on the road in Lusaka on Sunday when they visit Green Buffaloes who replaced them at number five.
