ZWMA acquires electricity measuring equipment

The Zambia Weights and Measures Agency has procured an electricity meter test bench, through funding from Ministry of Commerce Trade and Industry.

The equipment will be used to accurately measure energy flow through electricity meters.

This came to light today during the commemoration of the World Metrological Day which falls on 20th May annually.

Speaking during the event, ZWMA ChiePrepaid meterf Executive Officer Himba Cheelo revealed that the equipment will be commissioned after conclusion of the associated statutory instruments.

Ms Cheelo disclosed that the agency has also procured a laser scanner to be used to scan the volume of storage tanks within minutes.

She says looking to the future, the accuracy of measurements is getting more fined and more reliable and this is due in part to the use of optical technologies.

Ms Cheelo says it is gratifying to learn that as various industries grow in the promising Zambian economy, provisions for sustainable and environmental-friendly technologies are being taken into consideration.

Speaking at the same event, Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry Deputy Minister Miles Sampa says economic activities in Zambia and abroad in light-based technologies are beneficial to the wellbeing of the societies in that a number of key societal problems and challenges are solved with technology.

Mr. Sampa cites changes in global climate, energy production and national security as some of the examples of such technological challenges.

This year’s World Metrological Day was commemorated under the Theme: “Measurements and Light” and was organized by the Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) and the Zambia Weights and Measures Agency.
