Renard returns to France

French coach Hervé Renard is quitting the Ivory Coast national team job.

The two-time Africa Nations Cup winner’s decision to leave the Elephants, after guiding them to the long sought for title at the Equatorial Guinea tournament in February, paves the way for his imminent appointment as manager of French Ligue 1 side LOSC Lille, reports in the French media have claimed.

Lille are parting ways with manager René Girard, who could be compensated with €800 000.

The 46-year-old is expected to finalise details of a two or three-year deal with Lille.

Renard, who coached Sochaux to relegation two seasons ago before taking up the Ivory Coast job, is expected to be joined by close ally Patrice Beaumelle as his assistant.

If confirmed, Ivory Coast will have to quickly find a successor before their Afcon 2017 opening qualifier at home to Gabon on June 13.
