Govt commits to dealing with migrants trafficking

Government says it remains resolute on devising ways and means of dealing decisively with incidences of trafficking of migrants within the country’s borders and ensuring that the child on the move receives the most and best attention possible.

Speaking this morning when she officiated at a regional conference on the protection of children on the move, Vice President Inonge Wina says migrants especially children are prone to allInonge-Wina-Veep sorts of vices that violate their human rights and dignity.

Ms. Wina points out that Children’s dependency on adults for their wellbeing put them in uncertain situations when adult support is not present, adding that their plight is even worsened when they are on the move.

She says it is thus important that countries come together and identify challenges that undermine regional efforts in addressing vulnerable situations involving children on the move, asylum seekers, refugees and victims of trafficking.

Ms. Wina says government’s ratification of the UN protocol on human trafficking and the subsequent domestication of the protocol through enactment of the anti human trafficking Act number 11 of 2008 demonstrate Zambia’s commitment to addressing all issues affecting person’s in migratory situations.

She further states that government stands ready to corporate with other players in ensuring that the child on the move is well protected.

And United Nations representative George Okech has called for a comprehensive and well resourced effort with a particular focus on addressing the protection needs of vulnerable migrants and refugees with special attention to the rights of children.

He says the UN stands ready to support governments in their efforts to protect a child on the move.

And speaking earlier, European Union Head of delegation Rune Skinnebach disclosed that the EU has contributed a total amount of K14 million to the joint effort of combating human trafficking in Zambia.
