Opposition alliance backs constitution amendments

DAN-PULE

The United Front for Democracy (UDF), a loose alliance of five political parties, has called on all stakeholders to support the proposal by government to amend the current constitution through Parliament.

UDF Coordinator, Danny Pule says none contentious clauses in the final draft constitution can be taken to Parliament so that can be enshrined in the current constitution, while a referendum to adopt a new constitution can be held alongside the 2016 General elections.

Dr. Pule believes it will be difficult to mobilize the people to vote in a referendum going by the voter apathy that characterized the January 20th, 2015 Presidential by-election.

Dr. Pule has told QFM News in an interview that stakeholders championing the enactment of the new constitution before the 2016 General election are ignoring the challenges of holding a successful referendum.

He says this is the reason why some political parties have decided to support the government’s proposal to amend the current constitution looking at the time and the aspect of resources.
