Political scientist Alex Ng’oma has observed that last week’s general election in the United Kingdom has provided a lesson for Zambian politicians that leaders who lead their political parties to election defeats must resign.

Dr. Ng’oma notes that in a Democracy a political party should not be dependent on one individual, stating that a party can still continue to exist even without its founder.

He has told Qfm News in an interview by telephone that he is actually very disappointed that some Zambian political party leaders have vowed to die trying to become the country’s President no matter how many times they fail in their attempts at the presidency.

Dr. Ng’oma says it appears to him that such political leaders have not realized that there could be others with different ideas and ambitions of driving political parties forward.

He notes that it is therefore important for political leaders to take a leaf from the recently held UK elections where leaders that led their parties to defeat stepped down to give others chance to lead.

The political scientist states that if politicians begin to step aside after leading their political parties to election defeats in an election, it will in fact be good for Zambia’s democracy.

He says this is because Democracy is about turnover in leadership.
