The opposition Zambians for Empowerment and Development (ZED) says there is need for stakeholders to be realistic in their demands for a new republican constitution.

ZED President Fredrick Mutesa says the fact that President Edgar Lungu has already shown commitment to deliver a new constitution to the people of Zambia, and that there is no need to take a confrontational approach in view of government’s intention take to Parliament non contentious clauses for amendment.

Dr Mutesa says there is need for flexibility on the part of government and those demanding the adoption of the constitution through a referendum.

He says given the kind of resources involved in an undertaking such as the referendum, it realistically makes sense to hold the referendum jointly together with the 2016 general election.

Dr. Mutesa has told Qfm News by telephone that what is also important is to observe the roadmap for adoption by ensuring that the timeline that is set for doing so is adhered to.

He says what he would personally be worried about is when the content of the document that is adopted varies from what the people of Zambia want.
