Uphold professionalism,scribes urged

Information and Broadcasting Services Minister Chishimba Kambwili has implored media houses to strive for professionalism and ethical reporting at all times.

Speaking when he addressed journalists during the World Press Freedom commemoration in Lusaka this morning, Mr. Kambwili says the high levels of unethical and unprofessional conduct being exhibited by some media houses borders on criminality under the pretext of press freedom.

And Mr Kambwili says government attaches great importance to promoting media freedom in the country.

He adds that in this regard government has made progress in the process of enacting the access to Information Bill.

Mr Kambwili says the current status is that all the necessary adjustments have been made to the bill and his ministry is currently in consultation with the ministry of Justice in finalizing the process.

And speaking earlier Pres Freedom day organizing Committee Chairperson Enoch Ngoma has expressed worry over the low salaries for journalists in the country.

Mr. Ngoma has also expressed concern with the gender imbalance in media institutions.

He has since called for gender balancing in media institutions.

and Political party leaders have been urged to take a sober reflection on how their cadres have harassed journalists in the course of duty.

Journalists in Zambia today commemorate World Press Freedom Day which falls on the 3rd of May every.

UPND Deputy Spokesperson Edwin Lifwekelo has told Qfm News that the harassment of Journalists by political cadres should be condemned by all politicians.

Mr. Lifwekelo says this is a golden opportunity for political players to put their heads together and ensure that journalists are protected from harassment and attacks by cadres.

He adds that there is also need to create a conducive environment for media personnel to operate freely without political interference.

This year’s World Press Freedom Day is being commemorated under the theme “Media and Gender in the digital age equality”.
