Lifted public service wage freeze was ill conceived concept – Dodia

The Patriotic Front government has been advised to put in place a proper and complete performance appraisal system for salaries and wages now that the wage freeze on public service has been lifted.

Economic analyst Yusuf Dodia has suggested that this proper and complete performance appraisal system should be one that is backed up by key performance indicators which should set the benchmark for increasing or reducing a public service worker’s salary in terms of productivity.

In an interview with Qfm News Mr. Dodia has said doing this is worth it as it will give chance to see what the impact will be incurred on country’s national budget especially in the quest of improving productivity in the nation than to having a wage freeze that completely de-motivates the work force.

Mr. Dodia who is also Private Sector Development Association (PSDA) chairperson says he particularly thought of the implementation of the two years wage freeze government had imposed on the public service as being a big mistake.

He says the wage freeze was in fact telling public service workers that no matter how hard they were going to do their work, they were not going to be rewarded.

The economic analyst states that this is why he thinks President Edgar Lungu has done the right to lift the wage freeze because it was an ill conceived concept.

He notes that removing the wage freeze is a big incentive for public service workers to be productive.
