Govt sets aside US$1.7m to combat child marriages

Gender and Child Development Minister Professor Nkandu Luo

Gender and Child Development Minister Nkandu Luo says government has set aside another 1.7 million dollars to go towards programmes aimed at combating child marriages in the country.

Professor Luo says the programmes to do with curbing child marriages and early pregnancies are progressing well.

She explains that government has so far managed to engage with donors from the United States and the Canadian government to help finance the programmes.

Professor Luo adds that government through the ministry of gender and child development is also working tirelessly to ensure that the life of a girl child is protected.

She has also noted the role tradition leaders are playing in fighting child marriages in their chiefdoms.

The Gender Minister says her ministry will continue to work closely with all relevant stakeholders to end child marriages in the country.
