SACCORD disturbed by increase in tribal feelings

The Southern African Center for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) is concerned by the revelations of an Afro-barometer report suggesting that tribal feelings are increasing with intensity in Zambia.

SACCORD believes such a report should come as a source of worry to all stakeholders involved in national building.

Executive Director Boniface Cheembe says his organization fears that when people begin to identify themselves with their ethnic grouping more than their national identity, it means there is a problem.

Mr. Cheembe has told Qfm News in an interview that this requires political leaders to begin fostering national identify in the nation.

He says this essentially entails the need to go back to the basic fundamentals of tribe balancing where all tribes are included in central government irrespective of region.

Mr Cheembe states that this way everyone in the country will begin to feel part of the wider Zambian community and ultimately sustain a sense of national unity.
