Zambia National Women’s Lobby says the new report on sex workers in Zambia is disheartening.

ZNWL Board Chairperson Beauty Katebe has told Qfm news that it is also disappointing that some girls and women opt to sell their bodies for sex instead of selling other commodities to make money.

Ms. Katebe notes that the findings of the research conducted by TASINTHA indicating that the majority of sex workers indulge in such activities due to poverty, alcohol abuse and economic hardships are more than worrying.

She explains that girls and women should never think sex work is the only lucrative business they can do because they risk contracting deadly diseases and losing their lives.

Ms .Katebe stresses that it is not right for any girl or woman to indulge in such risk business because they are special regardless of their status.

She has since called for concerted efforts from all stakeholders to come up with activities that can keep such persons away from sex work exposure.

The new research report conducted by Tasintha indicates that of the four hundred and seven girls interviewed during the research, three hundred and ninety three (393) indulge in sex work due to poverty, economic hardships, alcohol abuse and breakdown in relationships among others.
