Caritas Zambia has described as shameful the changes made to the 2015 mining tax regime by Cabinet.

Caritas Zambia Executive Director Samuel Mulafulafu says the mining companies are making a lot of money from the country’s mineral resource.

Mr. Mulafulafu states that mining companies will always cry foul over tax issues even when it is not justified.

He says there is need for government to build capacity to be able to track the claims mining companies make such as the cost of production and other related issues and see whether the claims are justifiable.

Mr. Mulafulafu says government should have been courageous enough to maintain the 2015 mineral royalty tax.

He notes that a revenue loss of K2.3 billion is a lot of money for government to easily let go when the country needs the money.

Mr. Mulafulafu further states that as Caritas Zambia they are not happy but are very disappointed with the move taken by the Cabinet to approve the changes to the mining tax regime.
