Grand Coalition insists on clear direction on Constitution

The Grand Coalition on the people driven constitution in Eastern Province, has called on Government to provide a clear direction on the Constitution making process.

Grand Coalition Provincial Chairperson Maxson Nkhoma in a statement says it is his perceived view that Government, should have by now started facilitating for a national plan of action leading up to national consensus building on the draft constitution on various articles and consequently take the agreed upon document for a referendum before the 2016 general elections are held.

Mr Nkhoma states that Government’s old tricks of playing hide and seek games on the constitution making process will this time not work as it will be met with a strong resolve of oneness and a belief of good constitutionalism by the people of Zambia.

Mr. Nkhoma, who is also CSPR Eastern Province Coordinator, says continued delays by the government to give a clear roadmap on the constitution making process is a clear sign that the PF Government under the leadership of President Edgar Lungu is not willing to give the people of Zambia a people driven constitution before the 2016 general elections.

Meanwhile Mr Nkhoma says the Grand Coalition in province commends Government for distributing copies of the draft constitution to various stakeholders and institutions in the Province.

Mr. Nkhoma hopes that adequate copies of the draft constitution will be distributed in all the districts of Eastern Province to enable people in the Province read through and study the document extensively in order to make informed contributions towards the constitution making process.

He adds that should make copies available to traditional leaders who he believes are also key stakeholders in the constitution making process in order for them to study the provisions of the land article in the draft constitution and debate from a well informed position.

He says that now that Government has distributed the draft copies of constitution to stakeholders, the grand coalition and indeed the people of Zambia are waiting to hear from the Government the next step to be taken.
