The Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) has described the appointment of Justice Esau Chulu as Electoral Commission of Zambia Chairperson as a timely important decision.
FODEP says this is considering that the country will be holding general elections next year.
Executive Director Macdonald Chipenzi says his organization has taken note that from the time President Edgar Lungu appointed the former ECZ Chairperson Irene Mambilima to the position of Chief Justice, the country’s electoral body has been like an orphan.
Mr.Chipenzi says FODEP believes that at such a crucial time the country requires a steadfast Chairperson to lead the ECZ.
He says this is why FODEP is hopeful and has the belief that Justice Chulu will discharge his duties diligently.
Mr. Chipenzi has told Qfm news in an interview that from the interactions his organization has had with Justice Chulu, it has no doubt that the new ECZ Chairperson once ratified by Parliament will be a level headed Chairperson.
The FODEP Executive Director says it is further expected that Justice Chulu will be as fair and will execute his duties even better than his predecessors.
He has advised that Justice Chulu should also be mindful that the country’s electoral system does not need a Chairperson that makes decision on partisan lines.
