Constitution enactment too expensive – Zango

Zango Youth Consortium has charged that the draft Constitution is too expensive to implement.

Chairperson Kayimbo Katengo says his organisation has been studying the proposed draft constitution and has realized that implementing the proposed new institutional frameworks as outlined in the draft constitution will be a huge challenge for Zambia.

Mr Katengo says while the ideas are contained in the draft constitution are progressive; the country’s economic performance is still too fragile to be subjected to such huge economic obligations as demanded and contained in the draft constitution.

He says the survival of Zambia’s democracy heavily depends on the stability of the national economy.

He states that it will be the most unpatriotic act to call for the full implementation of the draft constitution knowing too well that it poses as a direct threat Government’s commitment of maintaining public stability.

Mr Katengo adds that Zango Youth Consortium agrees with President Edgar Lungu on his observation that the draft constitution actually presents critical challenges that the general public should take an interest in.

He says the language by interested stakeholders should change from demanding full implementation of the draft constitution to strategizing what is key within the current economic status.

He further states that the public must be quick to acknowledge Government commitment and appreciate the fact that the draft constitution is too expensive to implement.
