Zambia Weights and Measures Agency (ZWMA) has charged two (2) Lusaka–based companies for contravening the provisions of Section 32(1) (a) and (b) of the Weights and Measures Act, Cap 403 of the Laws of Zambia.

ZMWA Public Relations officer Diana Ngula has told Qfm News that the brief particulars of the offence are that the two companies are jointly charged for offering for the sale by weight short of the quantity demanded by the purchaser or represented by the seller.

Ms Ngula says this is a criminal offence under the said Act which brings out its own specific punishments when found guilty.

Ms Ngula explains that on 20th March, 2015, a team of ZWMA Metrologists visited both companies who are traders of Urea fertilizer for the purpose of inspecting the accuracy of their 50kg bags of Urea.

She states that the inspection was in response to a customer complaint which was later reported to ZWMA after buying 1,800 x 50kg bags of Urea from the companies situated along Mungwi Road, Light Industrial Area of Lusaka.

She says the complainant suspected that some bags were below the prescribed weight of 50kg.

Ms. Ngula says it was at this point that the Metrologists from ZWMA inspected the two companies.
