Zambia courts Brazilian military equipment manufacturer

SHACMAN

Discussions are underway with a renowned company, Shacman, which specializes in the manufacture of military-equipment, to set up a plant in Zambia.

Defence Deputy Minister Christopher Mulenga disclosed this after a meeting with Shacman Chief Executive Officer Reinaldo Reis Vieira and his delegation in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil yesterday, where the 10th LAAD exhibition on defence and security is taking place.

Mr. Mulenga said the company indicated willingness to set up an assembling plant in Zambia.

He said the plant would be assembling the troop carrier and other vehicles related to transportation in the defence and security wings, adding that this would come in handy especially with the challenge in troop carrier vehicles in Zambia.

Mr Mulenga said the company has requested to come to Zambia in June to explore further and make formalities.

He said the company was quite advanced as it supplied most of its goods to several countries across the globe, including the United States of America (USA), Britain, Saudi Arabia, with African interests in Ghana, Namibia and many others.

Mr. Mulenga said Shacman had highlighted the stability and security in Zambia and thought it appropriate to consider investing into the country, which would also act as supplier to the rest of the region.

He said he was attending the show to learn on ways to improve on the military and other security wings.

Mr. Mulenga also had various bilateral meetings with other companies interested in investing in Zambia, including Embraer, which manufactures commercial, military and cargo planes.

This is contained in a statement issued by Press Secretary at Zambia’s Embassy to Brazil Patson Chilemba.
