REA decries poor performance by contractors

Musonda REAThe Rural Electrification Authority (REA) has expressed concern over the poor performance of some of its contractors which has ultimately led to delays and non completion of projects.

Speaking when he officially opened a workshop for Contractors and Consultants on new approaches and trends in bid preparation and implementation of rural electrification projects this morning, REA Chief Executive Officer Geoffrey Musonda says the poor performance of some contractors is mainly as a result of their poor financial management of the projects.

Mr. Musonda notes that the reasons advanced by contractors for the delay in completing projects are many with the common one being that imported materials have often arrived late.

Mr. Musonda has also expressed worry that some contractors merely misapply the advance payment and others have opted to import materials some of which can be found locally in the hope of making supper profits hence delaying the completion of projects.

He says it is against this background that the Rural Electrification Authority has seen it fit to engage with contractors and consultants so that they are all adequately informed on how best to move forward.
