The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) has called on President Edgar Lungu to convene a stakeholders meeting involving Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), political parties and civil society organizations to discuss his proposal of introducing e-voting system in Zambia.

YALI Governance Advisor Isaac Mwanza has told QFM News that there is need to come up with a workable plan for the implementation of the e-voting system.

Mr. Mwanza has also called on President Lungu to give the nation an update on the progress made to introduce the electronic voting system in Zambian.

He says while his organization is happier with the pronouncements by President Lungu, he wishes to remind the President that such pronouncements must be backed up by concrete steps, commitment and action from both the Executive and public bodies such as ECZ.

He adds that the country has in the past heard such good pronouncements from their leaders that remained rhetoric.

He points out that late President Michael Sata once excited the nation that ballot papers will be printed in Zambia and had given deadlines but even in his death, the ballot papers for the January 20 Presidential elections were printed in South Africa.

Mr. Mwanza says President Lungu should also consider the proposal by citizens to conduct the Integrated population census that captures the census information that can readily be used by other State agencies as such ECZ, Department of National Registration and other government agencies such as Immigration,  Zambia Revenue Authority and many others.
