Zambia likely to meet MDGs on water – NWASCO

The National Water Supply and Sanitation Council (NWASCO) says Zambia is likely to meet the Millennium Development Goals on water and sanitation as the June 2015 deadline approaches.

NWASCO Public Relations Manager Rose Tembo has disclosed that urban and peri urban areas of Zambia have already met the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on water and sanitation.

Ms Tembo says the council will launch the final report tomorrow Friday giving the exact position of how the country has fared in meeting the MDGs on water and sanitation.

She explains that the target for meeting the MDGs is 72 percent of people in the country having access to clean water and 49 percent of people having access to improved sanitation.

Ms Tembo further explains that about 83.9 percent of people in urban and peri-urban areas have access to clean water in Zambia, while 58.7 percent have access to improved sanitation.
