Alleged desertion of Nsamba Secondary school by teachers worries PROTUZ

The Professional Teachers Union of Zambia (PROTUZ) has expressed concern over reports that about twenty teachers have deserted Nsamba Secondary School in Lunga district of Luapula province due to an accommodation crisis.

PROTUZ General Secretary Albert Muyembe says the situation is saddening because pupils are going to be negatively affected.

Mr. Muyembe says as much as it is the responsibility of government to provide accommodation to teachers, there is need for the community to also render a helping hand in addressing the situation.

He adds that it is disturbing to also learn that a number of retired teachers in the country are still occupying some teachers’ houses five or more years after retiring from the teaching service, a move which he says has negatively contributed to the accommodation crisis.

Mr. Muyembe has since appealed to government through the ministry of Education to assist in any way possible so that the teachers can return to the area and continue to provide their service to the pupils.
