Mwanakatwe appeals to ZPS market legal services to inmates

PrisonersLegal Aid Board Chairperson James Mwanakatwe has appealed to the Zambia Prisons Service to market the legal services available to the inmates by the institution to those who cannot afford lawyers.

Mr. Mwanakatwe says the role of the Legal Aid is to promote and protect human rights.

Mr. Mwanakatwe states that it is important for the Legal Aid and the Prisons to work together and foster justice for all.

Mr. Mwanakatwe notes that one of the challenges the Legal Aid is facing is lack of public awareness of its existence.

Mr. Mwanakatwe says there is need for the prisons service to sensitize inmates on the aid that is available to them.

Mr. Mwanakatwe says Prisons play a major role in the justice system of the country.

He says it is unfortunate that some inmates are not aware of the free legal services that the Legal aid offers.

He explains that the fact that someone has been convicted does not mean they should forfeit their basic human rights such as right to be heard.

He added that if stakeholders such as the Prisons Service and the judiciary work together they can address challenges inmates face such as delayed disposal of cases.
