MISA welcomes capitalization of Times, Daily Mail

The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Zambia has welcomed government’s plan to capitalize the Zambia Daily Mail and Times of Zambia newspapers.

Information and Broadcasting Services Minister Chishimba Kambwili has disclosed that as way of helping the two state owned newspapers become self reliant government intends to facilitate funds for them to be able to meet all statutory obligations owed to the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) and to the National Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA).

MISA Zambia Chairperson Helen Mwale says government’s plan to make the two newspapers self reliant is a step in the right direction.

Ms. Mwale has told Qfm News by telephone that the hope of her organization is that government speeds up the process.

She says MISA would like to see the two institutions free from government control and funding in order that they begin to make independent editorial decisions.

Ms. Mwale adds that MISA Zambia wants government to go further by fully transforming ZNBC into a public broadcaster.
