Zambia U20 men’s national team coach Hector Chilombo shared his disappointment over the nature of his side’s 5-2 loss to South Africa at the 2015 African Youth Championships on Sunday.
“We took time to settle and perhaps we gave to much respect and room for South Africa to capitalise on our shortcomings,” Chilombo told fazfootball.com.
“When we went to the break at 1-1 we believed that we could get the job done but our oppon
ents utilised their chances better. Even when they scored their second we kept fighting but we got punished on the counter.
“The whole team is disappointed because we deserved to do better,” Chilomb
o said.
The Junior Chipolopolo succumbed to their heaviest loss to Amajita in the final Group B game at the Leopald Senghor Stadium.
Chilombo’s men went into the match having being knocked out of the tournament due to earlier losses against Mali and Ghana.
Following a first half in which each side had scored a goal apiece, the Junior Chip
olopolo were undone by four clinical second half goals, the first time they had conceded in that manner.
Dumisani Zuma scored a goal in each half while Tyrone Sandows weighed in with a second half hat trick.
Zambia’s goals came via an own goal by Kabelo Seriba and an optional time strike by Charles Zulu.
In the other Group B match played in Mbour, Mali defeated Ghana 1 – 0 to maintain a 100% winning record at the tournament.
Ghana finish second with 6 points while South Africa were placed third with 3 points. Zambia crop
ped the group without a singlen point.
Nigeria, Senegal, Mali and Ghana qualified for the semi-finals and will represent Africa at the Fifa U20 World Cup in New Zealand in two months.
