Stay away from campaigns- ECZ tells Chiefs

Traditional leaders have been advised against taking part in open campaigns for particular candidates in the April 14 by-elections.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has reminded traditional leaders of the important role they are supposed to play in the electoral process of ensuring that elections are conducted in a peaceful manner.

ECZ Commissioner Christopher Mushabati says this means that chiefs in the country must not participate in partisan politics.

Justice Mushabati says his Commission particularly concerned with some traditional leaders who are reportedly intimidating, threatening, coercing and persuading their subjects to act in the particular way against their wish to vote for the candidate of their choice.

He has appealed to traditional leaders to instead be encouraging their subjects to turn up in great numbers on the polling day and vote for the candidate of their choice.
