TIZ welcomes DPP tribunal

Transparency International Zambia (TIZ) has welcomed the appointment of a Tribunal to probe the Director of Public Prosecutions Mutembo Nchito.

TIZ Executive Director Goodwell Lungu in a statement to QFM News says it is hoped that the allegations and counter allegation that have been flying around will now be put to rest.

Mr Lungu says TIZ has observed that some stakeholders have used the DPPs allegations as an opportunity for character assassination.Goodwell-Lungu-TIZ

He says it is TIZ’s hope that the tribunal will also protect the integrity of Constitutional Offices.

Mr Lungu states that TIZ appeals to all interested parties to now use the Tribunal as an avenue of settling all the issues surrounding the DPP.

Meanwhile Transparency International Zambia says the nomination by the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) of candidates whose parliamentary seats were nullified on account of electoral malpractices sends a wrong signal in the fight against corruption on the part of the PF government.

Mr Lungu says the action demonstrates that the PF have made a complete U-turn as it is public knowledge that when Transparency International Zambia raised debate on the eligibility of candidates whose seats were nullified on account of electoral malpractices, the PF strongly agreed with the TIZ position but now they are doing exactly the opposite.

He says TIZ has noted with concern that this trend to adopt candidates whose seats have been nullified on account of electoral malpractices has also been clearly demonstrated by opposition political parties such as the United Party for National Development (UPND) and the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) as well.

He says TIZ calls upon all political parties in Zambia to be more serious in the fight against corruption and desist from such tendencies and show a high moral ground when adopting candidates.

Mr Lungu states that TIZ will remain consistent and condemn such traits as they believe that leaders born out of corruption cannot be expected to fight corruption.
