UNICEF highlights CLTS achievements

UNICEF Chief of Wash Nicolas Osbert has disclosed that over five million Zambians have been reached with key messages of promoting improved sanitation.

Mr. Osbert has told QFM News in an interview that this has been possible with the help of the media in Zambia more especially the WASH Media Network.

Mr. Osbert states that the promotion of hygiene and sanitation by the network has been so helpful in the country as Zambia continues to strive in meeting the Millennium Development Goals on Health and Sanitation.

He is hopeful that before the end of this year, a lot of Zambians will have access to improved sanitation in a bid to save lives through the Community Total Led Sanitation (CLTS) Program.

He says it is worrying that every year, children continue to die of diarrheal diseases due to poor sanitary conditions.

Mr. Osbert explains that the project aims at targeting about 67 districts in 10 provinces to ensure that the people have access to improved sanitation.

And Media Network on Sanitation Coordinator Rinah Mukumba says the Media has a critical role to play in raising awareness among communities on water and sanitation issues.

Ms Mukumba says through the work of the Wash Media Network, more than 3 million people with Water, Sanitation and Hygiene messages have been reached.

She hopes to reach a much larger number this year by supporting UNICEF’s Hand Washing Campaign throughout the country.
