Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Zambia Chapter has congratulated women in the media for their hard work even under difficult environment as they commemorate International Women’s Day tomorrow.

MISA Zambia Chapter Chairperson Hellen Mwale has noted with sadness the findings in a survey conducted by the Alchemy Women in leadership that reveal the gaps that still exist in relation to the attainment of gender parity in the media sector especially with regard to women participation and occupation of leadership positions.

Ms Mwale says the survey shows that from the nine organizations sampled, that the number of women in leadership positions is very low compared to that of the men.

She explains that the survey also further revealed that generally women participation in the media remained relatively low compared to the male folk as the media in Zambia is highly patriarchal.

In line with this year’s theme “Gender is my agenda, let’s make it happen”, Ms Mwale has urged women in the media to take up the challenge of running media houses and fight for positions in leadership.

Ms Mwale has since urged all media houses to consider women in leadership positions as they are capable of performing just well as their male-folk.
