Grand Coalition urges govt to respect people’s wishes

CHIPENZI FODEP

The Grand Coalition on the Campaign for the people driven constitution says government should not try to evade the wishes of the people with respect the mode of adoption for the new constitution.

The Coalition has since dismissed government’s excuse that voter apathy will affect the successful holding of a referendum on the final draft constitution.

Coalition Spokesperson MacDonald Chipenzi has told Qfm News by telephone the Grand Coalition has taken note of the many excuses government has been making in order to avoid holding a referendum on the constitution.

Mr. Chipenzi has also challenged the Patriotic Front (PF) government to tell the nation whether or not it has revised its party manifesto which states that once in government it would adopt the new constitution through a national referendum.

He has wonders whether the PF government did not foresee the voter apathy at the time it formulated its manifesto and committed to adopt the constitution through a referendum.

Mr. Chipenzi states that the Grand Coalition still maintains that the country can adopt its new constitution through a referendum in good time for the 2016 general elections.

He has warned that the Coalition will de-campaign the PF government in 2016 should they proceed to enact the new constitution in piecemeal.
