Grade 12 results disappoint PROTUZ

Professional Teachers Union of Zambia (PROTUZ) is disappointed with the low pass rate of pupils who sat for the 2014 Grade 12 examinations.

And the teacher union has attributed the poor results recorded by 2014 G12 to over clouding in classrooms more especially in government schools.

PROTUZ General Secretary Albert Muyembe has told QFM News in an interview that most private schools performed far much better than government schools because of better learning environment.

Mr. Muyembe has also observed that there is no proper collaboration between government, teachers and parents which has also contributed to the poor performance of pupils.

He says there is need for the three entities to come together and come up with what he has termed as ‘collective wisdom’ to help pupils.

He adds that parents should also be blamed for not taking time to monitor how there children are doing at school and that the blame should not just be put on teachers alone.

And PROTUZ Deputy Secretary General Kampamba Tembo is of the view that it is unfair to blame government for the poor performance of pupils to the abolishment of tuitions which government banned last year.

Mrs Tembo says the only thing that government should critically look at is the pupil teacher ratio which she believes has contributed massively to the poor results recorded by the pupils.

She says pupils and teachers cannot concentrate where there are more than 100 pupils in a single classroom due to lack of teachers in schools.
