Chilumba defends goalkeeper selection

Power-Joshua-Titima-300Power Dynamos Coach Tennant Chilumba has defended his decision to bench first choice goalkeeper Joshua Titima in last Saturday’s 2015 Caf Confederation Cup away loss to Al Khartoum of Sudan.

Chilumba opted to play second choice Joel Kanyeba in the preliminary round, first leg match in Khartoum that Power lost 1-0.

It was also the first time that Kanyeba had started for Power in a continental club cup engagement.

“Every player in this squad must fight for his place,” Chilumba said.

“There is no permanent place for anyone. Whatever we do is purely technical.”

Chilumba has not been shy to rotate his goalkeepers especially last season when Titima and the ex-Under-17 shared responsibilities between the posts on Power’s way to finishing second in the 2014 FAZ Super League campaign.

Titima, who has five senior Zambia caps, has just returned to Power from Zambia duty at the 2015 Africa Cup in Equatorial Guinea where he was third choice behind Kennedy Mweene.

Meanwhile, Power will host Al Khartoum in the two side’s final leg fixture on March 1 at Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe but prior to that the Zambian club will warm-up for that tie this Saturday with a 2015 Charity Shield semi-final date against Zanaco at the same venue.
