Thornton hopeful Zambia-UK relations will remain strong

British High Commissioner James Thornton has expressed hope Zambia –United Kingdom relations will still continue being very strong under the new PF government.

Mr. Thornton says his country’s government is particularly encouraged by pronouncements that Zambia’s new President Edgar Lungu has made so far upon assuming office.

He notes that the United Kingdom has also been following with keen interest appointments that President Lungu has made in his Cabinet.

Mr. Thornton has told Qfm News by telephone his country looks forward to working with the Ministers that have been appointed in the new Cabinet just like it works with other governments of any duly elected President.

He has however stressed the importance for Zambia to respect human and democratic rights.

The British envoy says this means that people in the country should be free to say what they wish and journalists should be free to write what they wish.

He adds that people should be further free to gather peacefully when and where they want a state of affairs he hopes the PF government and the Police will facilitate.
